Former England captain John Terry has been ruled out of England’s crucial qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley on Tuesday. The Chelsea captain had been struggling with a rib injury in recent weeks but has picked up a fresh back injury whilst on international duty.
According to the FA, Terry will go back to Stamford Bridge to be treated with the London club hoping the injury is not serious enough to keep him out of their next league game against Aston Villa:
“John Terry has returned to Chelsea this evening with a back injury,” the statement read.
“Terry was assessed by England medical staff on Sunday and will not be fit to play any part in Tuesday's game against Montenegro.
“No further call-ups will be made at this time.”
The news will come as a big blow to manager Fabio Capello’s plans who has already seen one centre half, Phil Jagielka leave the squad because of injury
This means that the Italian has a straight choice between Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott or Gary Cahill to partner the returning Rio Ferdinand at the heart of his defence.
Cahill was called up to replace Jagielka on Friday. England’s injury worries in central defence have been well documented in recent months with both Terry and Ferdinand missing the last set of internationals.
Ferdinand will be playing his first international since before the World Cup and is anxiously waiting to see whether he will regain the captaincy from Liverpool star Steven Gerrard.
I am not surprised
